Griffith H. Morris1

M, b. 31 July 1836, d. 20 March 1897
He was baptized on 31 July 1836 at Llanbeblig, Caernavon, Wales.2 Griffith H. Morris lived in 1861 at Llanbeblig, Caernavon, Wales.3 He immigrated circa 1869 at probably to New York, New York, New York, It appears that Griffith emmigrated to the U.S. about the year 1869. I suggest this date because there is a gap between the birth of son Morris born in Wales in 1869 and Margaret (Maggie), born in Poultney, VT, in 1876.

No doubt Griffith left Wales for the U.S., leaving behond his wife and three children. In the Federal Census of 1870 he appears as a boarder at Hampton, Washington County, NY.

Wife Margaret must have come by 1880 when daughter Margaret (Maggie) was born in 1876 -- both were listed in the 1880 Federal Census.4,5,6 He died on 20 March 1897 at Poultney, Rutland, Vermont. At age 60.1

After the formation of the Ohio Company, in 1786,he was made one of the directors, and was empowered as their agent to negotiate with the Continental Congress for the purchase of 1,500,000acres of the public lands ; and in this contract he associated with himself Major Winthrop Sargent, secretary of the company. The tact he exhibited in this business, as well as the wisdom and ability shown in securing the insertion, in the celebrated ordinance of 1787, of those clauses which relate to "religion, morality and knowledge,"and to the exclusion of slavery from the Northwest Territory, is now generally acknowledged. The Hon. George F. Hoar, in his oration at the centennial celebration at Marietta, O., April 7, 1888, says of him: "Heras probably the fittest man on this continent, except Franklin, for a mission of delicate diplomacy. Cutler was a man after Franklin's pattern, and after Franklin's own heart. He was the most learned naturalist in Americana Franklin was the greatest master of physical science. He was a man of consummate prudence in speech and conduct, of courtly manners, a favorite in the drawing room and in the camp, with a wide circle of friends and correspondents among the most famous men of mistime." Dr. Cutler was active in sending out the company which commenced the settlement of Ohio, at Marietta, April 7, 1788, He visited the colony the same year and labored efficiently to promote its educational and religious interests. The degree of LL. D. was conferred upon him in September, 1789, by Yale College, and Heras a member of numerous scientific, literary, and benevolent societies. He served two terms in Congress, from 1801 to 1805, when he declined a re-election. Hedged at Hamilton, July 28, 1823, in the faith and hope of the Gospel, in the 82d year of his life and 52d of his
ministry. Rev. A. P. Peabody, D. D., of Cambridge, Mass., has written of him : ''For diversity of good gifts, for their efficient use, and for the variety of modes of valuable service to his country and to mankind, I doubt whether Manasseh Cutler has his equal in American history."

Mannaseh's and his son Ephraim's stories in the pioneer history of Ohio are told in "The Pioneers", by David McCullough.2,3 Mannaseh was born at Killingly, Windham, Connecticut, on 3 May 1742.1 He died on 28 July 1823 at Hamilton, Essex, Massachusetts.
