The Search for Betsey Lyon’s Parents

A Vermont marriage record for Luther Lane states that he married Betsey Lyon at Lunenburg, Essex County, VT on 31 Dec 1801. With that record in hand I began the search for her ancestors and it proved to be difficult, to say the least.

The first step was to look at the inhabitants of Lunenburg in the 1800 federal census. The only Lyon listed was one Eliphalet Lyon with 1 male between 26 and 44, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female between 16 and 25 and 1 female 45 and over. Guessing that this was the correct family, I looked at the younger female in Eliphalet’s household. Betsey, having married in 1801 would, I knew would have been between say 18 and 25 at the time of her marriage. That would place her birth date between 1775 and 1782 (subsequent findings place her birth before 1793). The young female in the census had to have been Betsey, but who were the other three people? Simple logic suggested that the elder male in the census was Eliphalet and the elder female was probably his wife. The younger male could have been an unmarried son or a hired hand.

Armed with these few clues, I set off in search of more information. I found a published genealogy of the Lyon family and in it was a single Eliphalet whose dates fell within the range of those listed in the Lunenburg census. Eliphalet, the son of Gould Lyon and Elizabeth Chapman, was born 8 Jan 1740, at Ashford, Windham County, CT. A check with Ashford’s vital records confirmed Eliphalet’s birth. Further searching on line turned up a marriage record for Eliphalet and Jane Pond on 12 Sep 1766, at Dedham, Norfolk County, MA. There the search dead ended and after two weeks of looking, nothing further could be found. Lots of false leads such as a prevalent unsourced on line listing stating that John, a son of Eliphalet Lyon, was born 5 Jul 1770, at Salisbury, Litchfield County, CT. There was indeed a John Lyon who died at Lunenburg, VT, 7 Mar 1855, whose death record stated that he was born in 1770. However, I suspected that the John, who was born in Salisbury, CT, was not our Eliphalet’s son because I wasn’t happy with the idea of the distances involved. Eliphalet would have had to have traveled about 150 miles. He then would have had to travel another 250-300 miles to get to Lunenburg. Both trips would have been overland, not impossible but, certainly unlikely. In addition, there is no record of the birth of a John Lyon in Salisbury, CT, nor is there any census record there of either Eliphalet or John between 1770 and 1800, Where the notion of the Salisbury John came from isn’t known but, it has been repeated many, many times on line.

I was sure that the Eliphalet of Ashford, CT was the Eliphalet of Lunenburg and the father of Betsey Lyon. I found nothing further of Eliphalet but, I found lots of evidence of his son John in and around Lunenburg. He married Lucy Bowker 20 Apr 1804, at Lunenburg. They had a son, Eliphalet born there circa 1809. Eliphalet, the younger, married at Stratford, Coos County, NH, Jane Tillotson and they moved to Newport, Quebec, Canada, where they were recorded in the censuses of 1851 and 1871.

Further research showed that Eliphalet the elder served in the French and Indian War between 1758 and 1759 at Fort Edward, near Lake George, NY. The 1850 federal census lists John Lyon, age 81, as a resident of Lunenburg and, that he was born in Massachusetts, not Connecticut. That was as far as I was able to trace the family.

Because two plus weeks of basically fruitless searching failed to turn up Eliphalet’s whereabouts between his 1766 marriage in Dedham and his 1800 census listing in Lunenburg, I gave up and turned to his wife Jane Pond’s ancestry. I found a Genealogical Record of Daniel Pond, which, on page 55 had a record of Jane Pond, born at Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA, 4 Apr 1745; married 12 Sep 1744, Eliphalet Lyon.
Another confirmation of their marriage but, more importantly, was a note appended to the listing for Jane’s younger brother Joshua: “February 10, 1787, Eliphalet Lyon, of New London, N.H., was appointed to administer on his [Joshua] estate, he [Joshua] having been absent for eight years.” This was clearly a breakthrough – Eliphalet was living in New London, now Merrimack County, NH, in 1787-1789. I then found a History of the Town of New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, 1779-1899.”

On page 120 of that history I found the following: “Tradition makes Eliphalet Lyon the second permanent settler of N. L. . . Eliphalet was evidently on old man, as his taxes were abated yearly from 1781 to 1784, and on the latter date ‘forever.’ [Eliphalet was hardly old, being 41 in 1781.]

“Lyon, John – In the conveyance by Nathaniel Fales to Joseph Trussell, Nov. 3, 1798, of Trussell’s original purchase, mention is made of John Lyon as a former owner of the land lying east of Lyon brook and south of the old highway from Woodbury’s corner (Crockett’s) to Minot’s square (Hominy Pot). From this it would appear that John was the son of Eliphalet, and succeeded to the land originally owned by the latter [Eliphalet]. There was also a Betsey Lyon baptized by Elder Seamans, March 30, 1793, who was perhaps the dau. of John.” This latter statement is in error because John didn’t marry until 1804 in Lunenburg, VT. I believe that this Betsey is the daughter of Eliphalet, born after 1775, but only baptized in 1793.

There was a 1790 federal census entry for John Lyon living in New London with 1 male under 16, 2 males 16 and over and 2 females. The 2 males 16+ were Eliphalet and John, the 20 females were Jane Pond and Betsey. I don’t know the identity of the younger male.

So, we have located Eliphalet as living in New London, NH, between at least 1781 and 1793. New London is at the northeast end of Lake Sunapee, NH and was as likely place to have stopped during Eliphalet’s long journey between his 1740 birthplace in northeast Connecticut and his final stop 60 years later in Lunenburg, Vermont.

I am satisfied that I have established an unbroken chain between Betsey Lyon and William Lyon, the immigrant who came to Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA, aboard the ship Hopewell in 1635. The chain goes William, Thomas, Thomas, Gould, Eliphalet, Betsey

John Roger Wood
Roswell, GA, 19 Jan, 2017.3,4,5,6,7,8 Eliphalet was born at Ashford, Windham, Connecticut, on 18 January 1739/40.1 He began military service in 1758 at Fort Edward, New York, He was in the 6th Company, 3rd Regiment at Fort Edward.7 He ended military service in 1759 at Fort Edward, Washington, New York.7 He married Jane Pond on 12 September 1766 at Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts.9 Eliphalet Lyon lived on 10 February 1787 at New London, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. The entry for Joshua Pond, brother of Jane Pond, who was Eliphalet Lyon's wife states, On "February 10 1787, Eliphalet Lyon, of New London, N.H., was appointed to administer on his [Joshua's] estate, he [Joshua] having been absent for eight years."

This gives further credence to the assumption that Eliphalet was residing at New London with his son John at the time of the 1790 census.

New London is at the north end of Lake Sunapee, and was probably on the route north to Lunenburg.4 He lived in 1800 at Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont.10 He died after 1800 at presumably, Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont. He disappears from the records after the 1800 census.10

Eliphelet Lyon was the only Lyon listed by name who was living in Lunenburg, VT, close to the time of Betsey's marriage to Luther according to the Census of 1800. The census lists 1 male 45 and older, perhaps Eliphelet; 1 male 26-44, perhaps John and 1 female 16-25, perhaps Betsey. The Lyon family was living nextdoor to Ebenezer Lane, the father of Betsey' husband Luther.

Indeed, Eliphelet is the only Lyon living in the northeast corner of Vermont in 1800.
