John Howland, and John
Tilley.
John ran the family farm in Sudbury until it was sold by his father in 1924.The next year John moved with his wife and five daughters to Poultney to try and find work. He managed to land a job at a slate quarry whose part owner was his brother-in-law Al Matot.

During the depression John only worked off and on, and his pay was often weeks late. This writer has seen account book for this period [now in the possession of the Poultney, VT Historical Society] and it lists the long hours John worked at the slate quarry, often 60 or more during a single week. It also lists the pay that was owed to him, sometimes less than $10 for a week's work. Times were tough for many families during the thirties, but John would never accept any charity and he always managed to provide enough for his five girls.

This writer, his grandson, remembers him as a very slender man with bright blue eyes and a wry sense of humor. During World War II he was an airplane spotter and air raid warden whose duty it was to scan the skies in search of enemy warplanes. None ever materialized, but John took his duties seriously, and I remember going with him to his spotter's site that sported a Morris chair.

John always planted a vegetable garden behind his house in Poultney, Vermont, and even thought the soil was composed mostly of slate chips, he managed to coax a bountiful harvest. He planted his peas as soon as the soil was warm enough, then the rest of the seeds were planted on Memorial Day.1 John was born at Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont, on 31 January 1891.2,3 He married Orpha Livona Jenks, daughter of Walter Marcellus Jenks and Clara Diana Warren, on 26 October 1910 at Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont.4,5 John apparently had appendicitis and was transported to Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, VT, sometime before this date and had his appendix taken out.

I have an undated postcard that was never mailed with the following writen in pencil, "Hello Mother and all at home. I am quite shure [sic] this is the same emergency room that I took my ether in. Am feeling fine and will probably be home in a couple of weeks. With Love, J. A. [John Albert].

The second postcard, postmarked at Burlington, VT 21 Jan 1911 (a Saturday), that was sent home to Sudbury, VT, by John's new wife Orpha Livona Jenks. The card contains the following message, "John still feeling fine. If he is as well tomorrow won't try to let you know until Monday (23 Jan). Have marked his bed in the picture (note the "X" in card # 2. He rec'd Grandpa's (J.D. Spaulding?) in the p.m. Love to all O. L. S. (Orpha Livona Spaulding.)

The card was addressed to Mrs. S. B. Spaulding, John's mother Eliza C. (Mound) Spaulding.6,7

John Albert Spaulding lived between 11 February 1925 and September 1925 at Poultney, Rutland, Vermont. His youngest daughter Jean was born 11 Feb 1925 at Sudbury and his eldest daughter Margaret entered Poultney Grammar School just after 1 Sep 1925. John probably moved from Sudbury to Poultney between the June end of the school Spring term in Sudbury and the start of the fall term in early September in Poultney.

The family was living in their own home at 12 Broughton Ave., in Poultney by September 1925 because this residence was listed on Margaret's Poultney Graded School report card, which started with the September term of that year. They were also at that address in 1927 because John and Orpha were listed as living there in the 1927 Poultney City Directory.

John was clearly well enough off when he left the farm to be able to able to purchase a house, albeit no doubt with a mortgage.8,9 John died on 28 April 1969 at Rutland, Rutland, Vermont, at age 78.10 He was buried after 28 April 1969 at Poultney Cemetery, Poultney, Rutland, Vermont.1

and Francis Cooke.
Roger's mother liked to say that he was born in the jail in Newport. Actually she and his father lived in an apartment in a building behind the jail.

Roger attended schools in Newport, Vermont, graduating from Newport High School in 1932. He attended college at Green Mountain Jr. College in Poultney, Vermont, on a basketball scholarship, graduating with an associate's degree in coaching in 1934.

After graduation he planned on going on to get a bachelor's degree, and did complete a third year at Green Mountain, but it was during the depression and money was scarce, so he was forced to try and find work. His coaching dream ended when he was married a year later in 1936 and became a father four months after that.

Roger worked at several jobs during the depression years, including gas station attendant, lineman for New England Telephone, and maintenance man at Green Mountain. During one year while he was between jobs, the family moved to Newport to live with his parents.

There were also several other moves during this period. By the time their son John was six-years-old, the family had lived in four different towns, and in six different rented apartments or houses.

With the beginning of World War II, Roger found employment with the Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, Vermont, and in March of 1943, the family moved from Poultney to Springfield to live in a brand new house -- the first they had ever owned. The house cost $4,000.

Roger worked at the Gear Shaper until 1949 when he went into business for himself operating a Shell gas station on Main Street in Springfield. The station was upgraded from a one-room shanty to new quarters in the Adnabrown Hotel soon thereafter.

In 1955 he sold the gas station to Richard Nelson and moved to a brand new station on the corner of River Street and the Chester Road. When the Adnabrown Hotel burned (and with it, the Nelson gas Station) in January 1960, Roger sold the River Street gas station to Dick Nelson and opened a Motel of the Chester Road called the Pa-Lo-Mar, named after his daughters. Pam, Lorinda, and Mary.

Roger and Margaret operated the motel until 1970 when they sold it to the Fox family. Roger then worked for Connecticut Valley Construction Company. Later, when CVC went bankrupt, he took a job with the Springfield School System, working in maintenance, and later as a janitor. As he grew older, he limited his work to that of a crossing guard, retiring completely in 1995.

As Roger reached his eighties it became apparent that he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and it became increasingly difficult for him to function. Finally in October 1996, the family was forced to admit that he could no longer stay at home, Margaret being unable to care for him. He was then admitted to Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, where he remained until his death in July 1997.

Roger was a man of strong principles and beliefs. While he was not a church goer, he did demonstrate those qualities so often listed in the Christian Scriptures. He was honest to a fault. He had an exceptionally strong sense of responsibility and duty, and he instilled those attributes in his children. He was also stubborn, especially when he got an idea into his head that he wanted to see through to completion. Woe betide anyone who said nay or got in his way.

On the whole, Roger was a good man who gave back to his family and community much of what he received. During his funeral service several acquaintances spoke telling of the times when he would bring someone home to dinner (without warning his wife beforehand) whom he thought needed a good hot meal. When an unmarried friend, Elwood "Pick" Winslow hurt his back, Roger brought him home and gave him his and Margaret's bed while he recovered.

During his life he was an avid sports fan, especially basketball. In Springfield, he played basketball for a season with the "Admirals" a semi-professional team in town. He also refereed some high school games. His granddaughter recalls that when he was in his seventies he challenged her to a game of one-on-one at the elementary school playground. When going in for a layup he fell and hurt his leg. He swore her to secrecy, not wanting his wife to find out how foolish he'd been.

As his eyesight and later his mind began to fail, he became less and less interested in sports. He retreated into his past to the point where he was completely out of touch with the present. One day shortly before his death he told me that "Moose would straighten things out." I asked his wife who "Moose" was and she told me that he was very large guy that Roger had played basketball with while he was at Green Mountain.

As I, write this some twelve years after his death, I wonder what things in his early life molded his behavior in his later life -- and, consequently, how his life molded my own.1

Roger was born at Newport, Orleans, Vermont, on 6 July 1913.2 He married Margaret Eleanor Spaulding, daughter of John Albert Spaulding and Orpha Livona Jenks, at the Methodist Church, Poultney, Rutland, Vermont, on 1 March 1936.3,4 Roger died on 9 July 1997 at Springfield Health & Rehab, Springfield, Windsor, Vermont, at age 84.      Ray was born at Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont, on 18 February 1927.2,1 Ray died on 3 September 1945 at Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont, at age 18. Ray was 18 when he was crushed beneath a farm tractor near his home in Sudbury.

"A short time after he had organized a party of friends in his neighborhood to attend the Rutland [Vermont] Fair later in the week, Ray Thurman Griffin, 18 was accidentally killed this morning (The tragedy occurred about 10 o'clock) when the tractor he was driving tipped over, crushing him beneath as he was turning into a side road near the Sudbury church. The tragedy occurred about 10 o'clock when the youth was driving the tractor, purchased by his father, Delmar Griffin, only a week ago, from Route 30 into a side road leading to fields in which his father was working and Mrs. John Delorme who loved nearby said they heard the young man cry out as the machine started to tip over. Dr. B.D. Colby was called. It was believed that death was instantaneous.

"The accident victim was a member of the Sudbury youth group.

"Earlier this morning, returning from an errand to the Jones store he had stopped along the way and called on his friends and neighbors, asking them to be ready to attend the Rutland Fair with him on Saturday.."
