Elia Ciprari

Immigrant | Y |
Elia was born at Palestrina, Italy, on 28 April 1890.1,2 He immigrated on 1 July 1913 to New York, New York, New York, Aboard the ship "San Giorgio", from Naples Italy. He is listed as being Single, age 23, and he had a passenger ID of 100678040036.3,1 He married Giuseppina Roscioli before 3 February 1921 at probably, Palestrina, Italy, Marriage date is based on the statement that Elia was the husband of "Q28" aboard the ship "Guiseppi Verdi."4,5 Elia Ciprari died in 1967 at Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts.3 A Soldier Who Became a Pacifist
“Your grandfather was of vital importance to the success of our family,” declared my father. I listened carefully to the story of my grandfather Elia Ciprari. His life was an exciting one filled with hardship. Elia Ciprari was a great man in my family for fighting in the Turko-Italian War, coming to the United States and becoming a pacifist, and for having his four sons fight for the United States in World War II.
At the age of twenty-one, my grandfather was shipped to Lybia to fight in the Turko-Italian War of 1911. He was holding the rank of sergeant in the Italian Army and was stationed at the front line. One night as he came off guard duty outside the trenches, his replacement’s head rolled into the trench. The Turks had run up,[and] decapitated him. That could have been my grandfather! When an Italian soldier was captured, the Turkish Army would bury him up to his neck in the desert and put honey on his head so the ants would eat him
In 1914, when the war had ended, Elia came to the United States. His experiences in the war drove him to become a pacifist. His goal was to earn enough money to bring his girlfriend to the United States and get married. His job as a laborer paid him one dollar a day. It took him six years to reach his goal.
Being a pacifist, my grandfather did not believe in war, but his love for the United States impelled him to allow his four sons to defend this country in WWII. Two of his sons were wounded but neither was killed. Elia incountered [sic] a fatal heart attack in 1967 at the age of seventy-six. The news of his death brought great sadness to my family, but we knew he had accomplished his goals in life.
Elia Ciprari lived a proud life. His loyalty to this country to which he belonged surpasses that of many Americans. He set a goal in life and reached it through courage and determination. These are the characteristics of a great man, my grandfather.

Unfortunately, William's will does not clearly indicate whether or not the beneficiaries listed are his children. In fact, it appears that the George and William listed are sons of George Wood. The relationship of George Wood, Sr. to the elder William Wood is not clear.
It would be very neat if our William and Dorothy, who married Thomas Flint, Sr., were siblings and children of the elder William, but I can't prove it from what was written in the Elder William's will.
That William and Dorothy were siblings, however, does seem to be likely and is the conclusion that J. Henry Lea came to on page 313.
So, at this point, I will have to only suggest that it was possible that the elder William of Matlock was the father of our William and Dorothy.2 William was born at County Derbyshire, England, say 1550. His birth date is a guess based on a probable age of 66 at death..1 He left a will on 31 December 1603 at Matlock, Derbyshire, England, To be buried in the churchyard of Matlock. To Francis Wood a cowe. To Dorothy Wood a sheepe. To Elizabeth Flinte a cowe. To George Wood and William Wood a sheep. "And my will is that the child's pt which was left unto the sd George Wood & Willm Wood by their father George Wood, etc." To Ellen Bunburye a sheep. Thomas Wood my brother. To Edmund Haslam & his children cowe & sheep. William Walker. Residue to my son Anthony Wood & appoint him Executor. To Agnes Wood 2 sheep.
Inventory taken 13 Sep 1616. Will proved at Lichfield 1 Nov 1616.2 He died before 13 September 1616 at Matlock, Derbyshire, England. The inventory of his estate was taken on 13 Sep 1616, which suggests that he died earlier that month.2 He immigrated in 1639 to Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts.3
