Whether or not Sarah Baker was the daughter of John Baker is moot, because there seems to be any number of John Bakers in New England in the early-to-mid 1600s. There was one whose wife's name was Charity and, as we have noted, there was a Charity Nason who, it seems was descended from Sarah Baker.

Robert Charles Anderson, writing in GMB 1: 72-78, was unable to definitively sort out the John Bakers in question.

In the final analysis, it seems that John Baker was not a nice person. He was the John Baker who beat Richard Nason black and blue.1,2 John Baker died say 1696 at London, London, England. He was executed.1

Josiah II Warren1

M, b. between 1748 and 1750, d. 28 May 1801
Father*Josiah I Warren b. 9 May 1724, d. b 2 Jun 1760; Whether or not the first Josiah is the second Josiah's father has not been proven. In fact, the existing records suggest that Josiah I and Joanna Spooner had no children despite 13 years of marriage. Note <362> attached to the entry for children of Josiah and Joanna states "No children are listed. Josiah's [will] administration, dated 2 June 1760, mentions no children. The unnamed widow is mentioned in the account which was allowed 4 Apr 1763. Plymouth County PR #21888."

This would seem to suggest that, indeed, the couple had no children, however, the absence of mention does not constitute proof that there were none.

See the "Warning out of Town" record in the Note of 18 Dec 1757, which does indeed suggest that Josiah and Joanna did indeed have children.2,3,4

The names of Josiah and Sarah Pratt's children were arrived at mostly by extrapolation from rare extant records and inference from ages and census records. It's mostly an exercise in assessing nd informed guessing guessing. The children I have listed are all based on their ages and where they were according to census reports. The only child whose death record explicitly says that his parents were Josiah and Sarah, was Jacob. I have extrapolated the other three from census and other data.

On 18 December 1757 Josiah Warren, a house carpenter of Middleborough, his unnamed wife, and four children: Josiah, Rode [Rhoda?] Ebenezer, and Joannah Warren were warned out to depart Dartmouth where they had been about a fortnight (Bristol County Court Rec 85).
The following note in John Billington 21:205 by John Bradley Arthaud sums up the evidence rather well: "Earlier editions of MF [Mayflower Families] 18:[3]:63 have Josiah as a possible son. Four children are named in the warning out. There are no other men named Josiah Warren recorded in Middleborough. Josiah Warren, a grantor in 1786, had a wife Sarah."3,5
He was a descendant of
Mayflower passengers Richard
Warren and John Billington.
Josiah was born at Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts, between 1748 and 1750. MF states that he is a possible son (but no proof found). However, see the note about the names of Josiah II and Sarah Pratt's
Children.

The Bowman file for Warren shows Josiah Warren who m. Middleboro 29 Mar 1700 Susannah Makepeace (Mayflower Descendant 30:12) as a possible child..1,6,7,8,9,10 He married Susannah Makepeace on 29 March 1770 at Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.11 Josiah II Warren married Sarah Catherine Pratt on 26 October 1777 at Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, They are both said to have been "of Middleborough."12 Josiah II Warren died on 28 May 1801 at Pomfret, Windsor, Vermont.1

Sarah was born at Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts, on 7 June 1759.1,3 She married Josiah II Warren on 26 October 1777 at Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, They are both said to have been "of Middleborough."4 As of 26 October 1777,her married name was Warren.4 Sarah's whereabouts after the Census of 1800 and her husband's death in 1801 remain a mystery. However, there was a female of 45+ years listed in the Household of Josiah III Warren at Elmore, VT, for the Censuses of 1810 and 1820. This woman could have been Sarah (Pratt) Warren.

The on line sources that claim she died 30 Jan 1822 at Middleborough, Mass., are incorrect. That Sarah Warren who died there was the window of Silvanus Warren, a cousin of Josiah II's. in 1800.5,6,7 Sarah Catherine Pratt died after 1 April 1828 at probably, Elmore, Washington, Vermont. Sarah was mentioned as a petiitioner as being the mother of Josiah on Page 105 of his Estate Probate papers, so she was still alive on 1 April 1828.

Several on line sources claim that she died at Middleborough, Plymouth County, Mass., 30 Jan 1822. Indeed there was a widow Sarah Warren who died on that date at Middleborough. However, the Sarah who died there was Sarah Washburn, the widow of Silvanus Warren, who died in 1809.

Curiously enough, Silvanus Warren, b. 9 Mar 1746 at Middleborough; was the son of Benjamin Warren, son of Samuel and Eleanore (Billington) Warren, hence Benjamin was a brother of our Josiah I Warren.8,5,9

Jacob was born at Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts, on 6 April 1780. The death record entry states that his parents were Josiah Warren and Sarah.

According to the 1860 Vermont Census he was born about 1780.

Ancestry.com entry for the Axelson Grandchildren Family Tree, gives his birth date as 1 Apr 1780 at Middleborough, but the entry is unsourced..1,2,3 He married Deliverance Reed say 1802 at perhaps, Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.2,4 Jacob Warren lived in 1810 at Elmore, Orleans, Vermont.5 He lived in 1860 at Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont.2 He died on 5 October 1865 at Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont. At age 85.1 He was buried after 6 October 1865 at Old Yard Cemetery, Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont. According to Jacob's gravestion inscription he was born in Middlebury, Mass., however, Middlebury, Mass. does not exist.

I did, however, research the name on line and four that it was an old name from the town in England that it was named after.

The name Middlebury was changed for the Mass. town to Middleborough, in Plymouth County, Mass.

Interestingly, Middleborough was where his Warren ancestors came from. His father Josiah II was very possibly born there.

Another piece of the puzzle falls into place..6

Page 159 . . .12th of 12th month 1757 . . . December 18 1757 . . . I have warned the within named Josiah Warren to depart . . . with his wife and four Children whose names are as Followeth Josiah, Rode (Rhoda), Ebenezer, Johannah, he came from Middleborough and followeth the Trade of a House Carpenter . . ."

From this we can surmise that this Josiah is Josiah I and his wife Joanna, with four children, the eldest of which is probably Josiah II.

It is no coincidence that there is a daughter Joannah, named after her mother. on 18 December 1757 at Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.6 Josiah I Warren lived on 10 April 1759 at Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts. "Micah Briant (Middleborough Housewright) adm. Josiah Warren (Middleborough Housewright) attached Jonathan Reed (Middleborough Husbandman). Tresspass on the case, on note dated 10 April 1759 for 14 bushels of corn worth 42 shillings, for 7 bushels of rye worth 30 shillings, and for 1 bushel and 3 pecks of wheat worth to shillings, payable 25 December 1759 to Warren or his order. Plus said refusal to pay was to their damage of 8 pounds. Default by deft. Judgement for 4 pounds, 2 shillings, 4 pence and 1 pound, 16 shillings, 4 pence costs."7 He died before 2 June 1760 at Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts.1 His estate was probated on 2 June 1760 at Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Administration of his estate was granted to Micha Bryant, 2 Jun 1760.8,1

  • Josiah II Warren+ b. bt 1748 - 1750, d. 28 May 1801; Whether or not the first Josiah is the second Josiah's father has not been proven.

See the "Warning out of Town" record in the Note of 18 Dec 1757, which does indeed suggest that Josiah and Joanna did indeed have children.1,9,10
