William's death is recorded in both the Reading and Wakefield published Vital Records, however, the Reading record states that he died 6 Jun 1689. His contemporary gravestone clearly states that he died 30 May 1689. Taylor Lovering1

M, b. 1772
Father*Moses Lovering b. 1 Jul 1735;
Lovering Family Identities

Proving the descent Sarah Ann Lovering from Moses Lovering of Exeter, NH, has proven to be difficult, to say the least. The descent of Moses from the immigrant John Lovering is well established, as is Moses’s marriage to Penelope Taylor on 10 Mar 1760, at Kingston, Rockingham County, NH. The couple settled in Exeter, NH, where they had at least nine children – some accounts claim twelve, but the last three are probably Moses Junior’s children. Four of the nine children have actual vital records listing their birth dates, the other five, including Sarah Ann’s grandfather Taylor Lovering’s birth have only International Genealogical Index (IGI) entries. While the IGI is perhaps an indicator, it is not always a reliable source for births, deaths and marriages.

So, we are left with noting that Taylor Lovering is a probable, but not proven, son of Moses Lovering and Penelope Taylor. The Taylor given name does provide circumstantial evidence that Penelope Taylor could be his mother. However, we still lack proof.

Assuming Taylor is indeed Sarah Ann’s grandfather, I started search for a wife. Noel Nugent and Harry Hewey (a distant cousin) who provided much of the information about the Loverings became the basis for my own research. Noel claimed that Taylor married ca 1800, Sarah Johnson, daughter of Caleb Johnson and Ruth Eastman but, I cannot find a single document, even and IGI entry, that confirms that claim. There is a NH vital records entry for a marriage between a Taylor Lovering and Ruth Rogers 23 December 1792, at Loudon, Merrimack County, NH. Whether or not this was our Taylor, I don’t know. However, many of the Loverings of this family did move to Loudon in the late 1700s, and a first name of Taylor is unusual enough to suggest that he might well be the correct Taylor. If so, Ruth must have died before 1800 in order for Taylor to have married Sarah Johnson, however, I have been unable to find a death record for Ruth.

There is again a bit of circumstantial evidence that Taylor did marry Sarah Johnson in the given name of Taylor’s son Johnson Lovering.

Trying to follow Taylor’s movements is also frustrating. A message posted on the Lovering message board at Ancestry.com dated 22 Apr 2001 states that he was in Loudon, NH for the 1800 Census and in Springfield, NH in 1810. However, when I checked those Censuses no Taylor Lovering was listed.

Noel claims that he was in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada in 1815, but does say where the information came from. Taylor is listed as a resident of Stanstead in the 1825 Census. There was himself and his wife, presumably Sarah, a child between 6-13, and a son between 18-24. The latter is probably son Johnson.

There are two marriages for Johnson listed in the Drouin Collection: one to Mary Daniels on 14 Sep 1826, in Hatley, Quebec. The second is to Hannah Wodley or Wadleigh on 9 Sep 1838, at Barnston, Stanstead, Quebec.

Here’s what we know: Taylor Lovering probably was the son of Moses Lovering and Penelope Taylor. He was probably born in 1772 at Exeter, Rockingham County, NH. He may have been the Taylor Lovering who married Ruth Rogers at Loudon, Merrimack County, NH, 23 Dec 1792. Ruth may have died before 1800 and Taylor probably married Sarah Johnson, say 1800. Since I can’t find a marriage for Taylor and Sarah, I don’t know where they were married.

As one can see from the above, there is a good bit of conjecture involved in piecing this all together and it is subject to much revision if new information comes to light.

     Taylor was born at Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire, in 1772.1,4 He married Ruth Rogers on 23 December 1792 at Loudon, Merrimack, New Hampshire, If this is the correct Taylor Lovering, and the location suggests that it is, then she must have died in order for Taylor to have married a Sarah Johnson ca 1800.5 Taylor Lovering married Sarah Johnson say 1800 at perhaps, Loudon, Merrimack, New Hampshire, Their is no recorded evidence for this marriage, but there was a Samuel Johnson living in Loudon at the time of this assumed marriage, according to the 1800 census. This Samuel is probably not Sarah's father because he wasn't married until 1784, to Elizabeth Fisk.1,2 Taylor Lovering lived in 1815 at Stanstead County, Quebec, Canada. I can find no evidence of him in Canada before 1825, so this entry is entered without any strong source.1 He lived in 1825 at Stanstead, Richlieu, Quebec, Canada. In this census Taylor and his wife were listed a son between 6 and 13, and a son between 18 and 24. This last son was probably Johnson, who was born car 1801. Daughter Lydia had been married the year before and was no longer a member of Taylor's household.6
