It has been handed down by tradition that the family of DAY originally came from Wales. In a book of heraldry, containing the arms of William Day, B D Provost of Eaton College and Dean of Windsor, confirmed by William Flower, Norroy, on 21 Oct 1582, he is said to be "descended from the DAIS of Wales, viz. being the younger son of Richard Day, son of Nicholas Day, son of John Dee (called by the English, Daye). He was son of Morgan Dee, younger brother of Richard Dee, Welshman."

Dee, signifying, it is said, dark or dingy, is the name of a small river in Wales, and was probably applied to some ancestor of the family, and in time, the word came to be written, according to its apparent sound, Daye or Day.

Within the first thirty years of the settlement of New England, eight persons surnamed Day hod arrived, six before Anthony.1 Anthony was born at England circa 1617.1 He immigrated on 16 July 1635 to Virginia, aboard the "Paule." At age 19 he left London, England, bound for Virginia. His first ten years in America are a mystery.1 He lived in 1645 at Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts.2 He married Susanna Matchett at Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts, after 11 September 1649.3 Anthony died on 23 April 1707 at Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts.
