Asa Smith came to Clarendon, VT, from Weston, MA, and was the first white man to discover Clarendon Springs in 1776. ("History of Rutland County" 950). Asa, a scout and trapper, guided by a dream, so he said, is claimed to have found relief from skin eruptions by binding the clay substance found around the spring in West Clarendon on his painful sores. (Clarendon, VT, 1761-1976, Rutland ca 1976, pg. 88) He bought and sold several pieces of land as indicated by the following: "Laid out to Asa Smith, 100 acres of land bounded by Daniel Briggs' land, west of the great bridge. 1779 April 23" (Clarendon Proprietors' Book 1:43). "Asa Smith on right of Samuel Gates, 19 1/2 acres. 1780 September 8" (Ibid, 1:64). "Asa Smith received 125 acres. 1779 September 22" (Ibid, 1:159). "Asa Smith received 8 acres. 1786 March 15", and again on 1787 February 9 (Ibid, 1:180, 185). "James Claghorn, commissioner of Rutland County Probate, for 244 pounds paid by Asa Smith of Clarendon for land which was Sampson Jenney's and Jeremiah Parker's, who by treasonable conduct [they were tories who supported the British during the Revolutionary War and had their property confiscated by the Vermont authorities] have forfeited . . . bounded by land of Daniel Briggs and Otter Creek. 1779 April ?" (Clarendon deeds 1:19). Asa is listed as a Clarendon, VT, head of household in the 1791, 1800, and 1810 censuses. The author is indebted to Margaret R. Jenks for providing the preceding information about Asa Smith. Asa was born at Weston, Middlesex, Massachusetts, on 21 February 1743.1,2 He was marriage intent on 28 October 1763 at Weston, Middlesex, Massachusetts, The Intent to Marry Rebecca Spring was published, but they did not marry.1,3 He was marriage intent on 15 March 1764 at Weston, Middlesex, Massachusetts.4 He married Mary Flagg, daughter of Allen Flagg Jr and Prudence Child, at Weston, Middlesex, Massachusetts, on 5 April 1764.1,5 He married Mrs. Hepzibah Billings at Shrewsbury, Rutland, Vermont, on 21 November 1811.5 Asa died on 22 March 1813 at East Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont, at age 70.6 He was buried after 22 March 1813, in the East Clarendon Cemetery, East Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont.
