Other than stating his place of birth as "Prussia" on his naturalization papers, Jacob's exact place of birth remains unknown, as does his point of entry into North America. Family tradition says that he came to Vermont from Canada, and indeed, there was one Jacob Mount listed as a "clerk in Dalhousie Street near William Street, Montreal" in the "Lovell's City Directory" for 1848.

If Jacob was a clerk, he had to have been a store clerk rather than an office clerk because he could not write. He signed his naturalization papers of 20 December 1855 with his mark, not his signature. Jacob was born at Prussia, Germany, on 20 May 1817.2 He immigrated circa 1845 at probably to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He married Eliza Carr, daughter of Thomas Carr and Mary unknown, circa April 1849. Based on eldest son Thomas's birth data..1 Jacob Mound lived in 1850 at Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont. He is listed with wife, Eliza and son Thomas, age one.3 He was naturalized on 20 December 1855 at Rutland, Rutland, Vermont.4 Jacob died on 10 February 1899 at Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont, at age 81.2 He was buried after 10 February 1899, in the Sudbury Hill Cemetery, Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont.      Eliza's birthplace in Ireland remains a mystery, as does the location of the port where she entered North America. Family tales say that she came to this continent via Canada, but I have not been able to verify this from contemporary records. She may have married Jacob Mound in Canada before they both came to Vermont.

There was a Francis Carr, born County Donegal, Ireland, in 1823, who became a naturalized American citizen in 1854 in Rutland, Vermont. Rutland is the County Seat of Rutland County, Vermont. Eliza and her husband were living in the western part of this county in 1850. There is no information available to conclude that Francis and Eliza were related, except for the closeness of their birth dates, and Irish origin, and the closeness of their residences in the 1850s.

In an advertisement in the Boston Pilot, dated 12 Jun 1858, one Mary Car, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is looking for Eliza Carr. Also listed are William Carr (father) and Robert Carr (no relation given). James and Richard Burriss are also listed. Mary's Irish home was in County Carlow.

There was an Eliza Carr who entered this country on 13 Oct 1846, at New York City, aboard the Ship "Luconia" from Liverpool, England. Her age was listed as being 19, giving her birth year as 1827.

She might, or might not, have been our Eliza. The dates match, but the NYC Port of Entry clashes with the Canadian entry of family stories.

Given all this extraneous information, all we know for sure is that Eliza was born in Ireland, the daughter of one Thomas Carr.2,3 Eliza was born at Ireland on 1 May 1826.1 She married Jacob Mound circa April 1849. Based on eldest son Thomas's birth data..4 As of circa April 1849,her married name was Mound. Eliza Carr immigrated in 1850 to North America. She might have come first to Canada.5 Eliza died on 7 January 1904 at Castleton, Rutland, Vermont, at age 77.1,6,7 She was buried on 9 January 1904, in the Sudbury Hill Cemetery, Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont.      The will of Arima Smith of Clarendon gave "to wife Eunice . ; to son Elisah D. . ; to son Enoch . ; to son Socraties . ; to son Nathan . ; to daughter Louisa Spaulding . ; to son Seneca . . . dated" 1828 September 2, signed Arima Smith. Proved at the court of 1838 June 25. The will shows he held land in Westmore, Orleans County, Vermont (Rutland County Probate, Rutland District 16:486). Arima was in the Clarendon Censuses from 1800 to 1820. He is not listed in the 1830 and 1840 censuses, but his son is listed, and since Eunice is with Enoch in 1850, they were probably one household. The author is indebted to Margaret R. Jenks for the preceding information about Arima Smith. Arimathea was born at Weston, Middlesex, Massachusetts, on 10 August 1767.1,2 He married Eunice Denison, daughter of Elisha Denison and Keturah Miner, at Ludlow, Windsor, Vermont, on 15 February 1797.3 Arimathea died on 8 August 1836 at Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont, at age 68.4 He was buried after 8 August 1836, in the East Clarendon Cemetery, East Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont.
