William was born at presumably, Colchester, Essex, England, circa 1622. This assumes that William was say, 15 at the time of his indenture and he would have been released from that indenture when he reached the age of 21, say in 1643.
Let's assume that William did indeed reach the age of 21 in 1643 and was freed from his indenture, he would have needed a few years to have become self-sufficient and capable of marrying.
We know that he probably married say 1647, to his first wife Elizabeth Partridge, who died 28 Apr 1648, probably as the result of childbirth associated with their first child John.
All of these dates seem to fit a young man born in England between 1620 and 1622..2,3,4,5 He immigrated say March 1637 to Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts. On 27 March 1637 "William Spooner of Colchester, Essex, England, indentured himself to John Holmes of New Plymouth in America gent. for a term of six years.
John Holmes subsequently sold William's indenture on 1 Jul 1637, presumably after William arrived at Plymouth, to John Coombs.6,7 He married Elizabeth Partridge say 1647 at Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.8 He married Hannah Pratt, daughter of Joshua Pratt and Bathsheba unknown, at Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, on 18 March 1651/52.8,5,9,10 William I Spooner lived in 1670 at Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.5 He left a will on 8 March 1683/84 at Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.11 He died between 8 March 1683/84 and 14 March 1683/84 at perhaps, Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.12

According to Fred Smith, son of Charles Smith, Charles's mother's surname was Ward .. Based on this information in lieu of any official birth records, it has always been assumed that Lydia was born a Waid. According to Fred, her birth date was "about 1802," with no place of birth stated.
Further assumptions by both John Wood and Noel A. Nugent, have assumed that, because Lydia would have been about 30 years old at the time of her marriage to Christopher Smith, her marriage to Christopher was her second marriage, as was Christopher's. We thought might have been married to a son of Luther Lane, who lived next to James Waid in Granby, VT at the time of the 1820 federal census.
We had both assumed that she was Lydia Waid, a daughter of James Waid who lived in the neighboring towns of Granby, Concord and Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont. However, there doesn't seem to be any evidence, either for the birth of a Lydia Waid, nor her marriage to an unknown Lane, nor any record of a death for an unknown Lane male.
Searches on line by John Wood revealed a birth record for one Lydia Lane, daughter of Luther Lane and Elizabeth (?) born 8 Sep 1802, at Lunenburg, Essex County, Vermont, caused a change of direction in thinking.
What if Christopher Smith's wife Lydia was born a Lane then married a Waid, perhaps a son of James. Suppose the son died, say some time around 1830 or before? In 1820 the Lanes and the Waids were near neighbors in Granby, just about the time that Lydia and an unknown son of James Waid might have started courting. The problem with proving any of this lies in the paucity of records for Granby. The town had virtually emptied out during the "Year Without a Summer" of 1816, leaving only three families. James Waid's was one of those three. James's wife died during the terrible winter of 1816-17. Consequently, I doubt that anyone was keeping official records during those years.
One further piece of evidence that seem to clinch the "Lane" surname, perhaps even without a prior Waid marriage, is the "State of New Hampshire. Certificate of Marriage. For Charles Smith", a copy of which is in the possession of John R. Wood, clearly states that, the mother of the groom was Lydia Lane.
The final key to Lydia's identity came from an 1822 marriage record for the town of Granby, VT, stating that Lydia L. Lane married one Ebenezer Waid on 27 Jan 1822.
As far as I am concerned that marriage record clinches it. Lydia Lane, born 8 Sep 1802 married Ebenezer Waid, when she was almost 20 years old. Ebenezer subsequently either died, or took of, and Lydia married Christopher O. Smith at Lunenburg on 13 Nov 1832. at about the identity of this Lydia.2,3 Lydia was born at Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont, on 8 September 1802.6,7 As of 27 January 1822,her married name was Waid.2,4 She married Ebenezer Waid on 27 January 1822 at Granby, Essex, Vermont, There is a Vermont Marriage Record for a marriage between Lydia L. (Luther?) Lane and an Ebenezer Waid.
Could this be the key to her identity.2,4 She married Christopher C. Smith, son of Christopher Smith Jr. and Susanna Cowden, at Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont, on 13 November 1831. The Smith Bible states that the wedding took place 13 Nov 1832, while the Vermont Marriage Record gives the year as 1831..1,8 As of 13 November 1832,her married name was Smith.1 Lydia died on 26 February 1850 at Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont, at age 47. Inscribed in the bible was the following: "Lydia Smith died Feb the 26 1850 in the 47th year of her age. The request that her son Charles should have this Book wer [sic] her last words."
In the front of the bible was the following: "Charles Smith A Present from his mother Lydia Smith 'Read this Volume Practice its precepts Meet [sic] me in Heaven.'".1
