There is a real problem with Jonathan Fuller, Jr. and his wife (wives.) The Bucklin Family Group Sheets say that he married Mary Stevens in Attleboro, Mass., on 15 Feb 1687, however, Rehoboth Vital Records shows that he married Mary Shove on either 11 or 15 Feb 1687. There's no V.R. record of him marrying Mary Stevens.

I am, for the moment, accepting the fact that Jonathan married Mary Shove in 1687, and that she bore him three children, all but one of which died without issue. The third child, Mehitable, married someone whose surname was Swettland (Sweetland?) before 1723.

Mary Shove, if she existed, or was perhaps Mary Stevens, the widow of (?) Shove, and, therefore the ancestor of subsequent Fullers, Sweetlands and Bucklins.

Fullers, Sissons, and Scotts:ITAL), furthermore, claims that he married 1st Mary Shove, by whom he had three children: Esther, Mason and Mehitable, who married before 1723, ___ Swettland.

I can find no records anywhere that shows a birth record of any of these three people. Jonathan was born at Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts, on 23 December 1665.1,2,3 He married Mary Shove at Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts, on 15 February 1687.      Thomas was born at possibly, Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, circa 1665.1 The Search for the Parents of Thomas Wise

A pedigree of one Rachel Fuller, dau. of Elizabeth Wise and Jonathan Fuller, by Doris Fisher Anderson, [Bucklin Family Group Sheets] gives his birth year as 1665 and LDS AF gives it as 1675. Either date is possible. However, he is listed as being of Ipswich, Essex County, MA, on 24 Apr 1698, when he sold property in York, Maine, to one Daniel Black. If he had been born in 1675, he would have been 23 at the time, barely into full manhood. The 1675 birth date is, therefore, more likely. The same pedigree claims that Thomas's parents were Joseph and Mary Thompson Wise. There is, however, no record that I can find that backs up this claim. Indeed. given the presumed birth dates of Joseph and Mary (Thompson) Wise (1616 and 1619, respectively), it is more likely that they would have been the grandparents rather than parents of Thomas.

Joseph Wise & Mary Thompson did have a son named Joseph (according to Savage) , b. Roxbury, Suffolk, MA, 1 Apr 1643, who might possibly been the father of Thomas. According to an article in the NEHGS Register (Vol 8, Apr 1854, pg. 168) entitled "Early Settlers of Essex and Old Norfolk," there was a Joseph aged 22 in 1665 listed in Essex County, MA. If this Joseph is son of Joseph & Mary (and the dates are right), then he was brother to John Wise who was minister at Ipswich from 1682 or 84 (Savage, 4:614). It is tempting to assume that, since Thomas was at Ipswich in 1698, he probably was the son of Joseph, but that is hardly proof. It is probable, however, that Thomas was in some way connected to the family of Joseph Wise Sr. How he might have been connected remains a mystery.

The children of Thomas and Elizabeth? (?) Doris Fisher Anderson says her given name was Anne, but Gloucester, Essex, MA, vital records lists the birth of Dorcas Wise, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, so I will go with Elizabeth). . The IGI says that Benjamin was b. about 1695 in Winham (should be Wenham), Essex, MA, and married 1725 in Gloucester, Essex, MA.

Dorcas was married to Abraham Follet in Attleboro, just after they expressed their intent, 12 May 1726. Abraham died at some point and Dorcas remarried Ephraim Blanding after expressing their intent on 15 Nov 1760.

Interestingly, Dorcas Follet, daughter of Dorcas (Wise) and Abraham Follet, express her intent to marry a John Wise of Lebanon, CT, in Attleboro, on 6 Apr 1754. One wonders who this John Wise was?

Elizabeth Wise is listed by the IGI as being b. Attleboro about 1701/02, and Anderson only lists her birth year as 1702, but being "of Attleboro" when she was married 30 Mar 1725. However, if we accept that the Thomas Wise and family who were warned out of Gloucester, Essex, Ma, 23 Apr 1705, Elizabeth was probably born Ipswich. We know from the Gloucester vital records that Dorcas and John Wise were born at Gloucester in 1705 and 1709, respectively. The April warning out refers to Thomas Wise and family, suggesting that Elizabeth and Benjamin were born before 1705.

Assuming that all of the above is true, then it is possible that Thomas and Elizabeth were married some time before 1695 in Essex County, MA, when Thomas was about 20. They would have moved to Attleboro, Bristol County, MA, some time later and were living there in 1725 when Elizabeth married Jonathan Fuller. The move could have happened after Benjamin reached his majority, say 1716, since he apparently stayed in Essex county until after his marriage to Prudence Gott. If this is true, all four children would have been born in Essex County.

When Thomas made his will in 1728 he named his wife Elizabeth, sons Benjamin and John and daughters Elizabeth Fuller and Dorcas Follet.

Nothing further is known about the ancestry of Thomas Wise.2,3,4,5,6,1 He lived in July 1684 at York, York, Maine. He was called a fisherman who bought properrty there from John Stover, then sold it to Isaace Goodridge in Dec 1685. He was living in York in April 1691 and in Dec 1691 completed an agreement with william Hilton. In 1694 he and wife Elizabeth were named in a Star Island warrent, but did not appear.2 He married Elizabeth unknown at possibly, Essex County, Massachusetts, before 1694.1,2 Thomas Wise lived on 24 September 1698 at Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts. Thomas sold 11 acres of Burnt Plain property in York, Maine to Daniel Black.7,2 He lived on 23 April 1705 at Glouceste, Essex, Massachusetts. He and his family were warned out of Gloucester on this date.

In that same year he bought property in Gloucester.8,2 He left a will on 26 April 1728 at Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts, He named his son Benjamin his executor.3 He died between 26 April 1728 and 10 June 1728 at Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts.3 His estate was probated on 10 June 1728 at Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts. Whether or not he is the father of the supposed Sarah Bisbee, husband of Francis Stevens, remains to be seen.

The only authority I have for this notion is the Bucklin Family Group Sheets, compiled by Freda Beach and I'm not thrilled with her reliability as a researcher.

We are fairly certain that Thomas Besbeech married Ann Basenden on 14 Jan 1618/19, which would have allowed for a 1618/19 birth of our Sarah. However, why is there a second Sarah who was born 1621/22 and died in 1628 -- not unheard of, but unlikely.

Our Sarah could not have been born much later than 1619 and still have been old enough to have married Francis Stevens in early 1639.

To complicate matters, there is the problem with the passenger manifest of the "Hercules" aboard which Thomas Besbeech, with six children and three servants embarked from Sandwich, Kent, England.

The Great Migration lists only three children: Mary, Sarah, and Alice. This Sarah was the one that was buried in England. So where are the other four children?

Other reasonably reliable sources include a son Elisha, who left many descendants in America.

One further clue: Francis Stevens had three daughters named Sarah, Anne, and Mary, presumably named after his wife and her two sisters.

While I can't prove it at the moment, I am going to assume that the Sarah who was buried in England, wasn't the daughter Sarah, but was perhaps another daughter, or the daughters of another Thomas Besbeech.3 He was baptized on 3 March 1589/90 at Biddenden, Kent, England.4 He married Ann Basenden at Biddenden, Kent, England, on 11 January 1618/19. Savage names his English home town as Frittenden..4 Thomas Besbeech immigrated in 1635 to Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, aboard the "Hercules." Savage says he embarked with "six children and three servants.2,1 Thomas died on 9 March 1673/74 at Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts, at age 84.2,4
