Whether or not this Thomas Gilman is the Thomas Gilman of Exeter, NH, whose daughter Sarah married Major David Folsom, remains to be proven. Various sources, including the I.G.I. and the LDS Ancestral File, give his birth anywhere from 1690 to 1708. They also give his marriage at about 1733/34, which seems to be too late to have had daughter Sarah in time for her to be old enough to marry in 1750.

For the time being, as a working hypothesis, this Thomas will be assumed to be the father of Sarah Gilman Folsom.

On the side of positive evidence bolstering his status as Sarah's father are the names of several of Sarah's children: James, Ezekiel, and Hannah. All were the names of brothers and sister, or uncles of this Thomas. Also, Sarah's son Ezekiel, named one of his sons Moses. Thomas's grandfather Gilman was named Moses.

Sarah also named a son Winthrop. Thomas's brother Andrew Gilman named one of his sons Winthrop.

I think there is a strong case for having the right Thomas Gilman. Thomas was born at Newmarket, Rockingham, New Hampshire, in 1708.1,2 He was living in 1723 at Newmarket, Rockingham, New Hampshire.3 He married (?) unknown say 1730. A guess based on them being the parents of Sarah..

Thomas originally came to New England in 1630, but he made a return trip to England in 1632, returning to Salem, Ma, 10 November 1633 in the ship James. With him was his new and second wife Catherine Whiting. Catherine is the mother of all his children.

As to where Thomas lived in New Hampshire, this author is somewhat confused. He is listed as living and dying in Squamscot or Quanscot, which is very close to the present town of Dover. Where it actually was, however, isn't known by this author. Squamscot may be the present town of Hampton, NH.      Christian was illiterate, and we are 99% sure he spoke Scottish Gaelic not English. He learned English in New Hampshire, and therefore spoke with a heavy Scottish brogue and his pronunciation of things was different than the English. He was an indentured servant at Lissen's sawmill in what is now Dover NH for 7 years until 1656 or so. He was befriended by a wealthier man (also a Scot) named John Mac Bean. He was left some property by his first wife's relative Moulton, and then he was given land by the town of Exeter to relocate and settle there. He was given acreage there at least twice. His property was surrounded by property owned by at least three other Scots who were also indentured servants. We believe from the general history of the other Scottish Indentured servants that the original Christian was a teenage prisoner from Cromwell’s war. He was brought to New England and put in indentured servitude by the English until he secured his ""Freedom" at the end of his servitude. Since there were so many recorded spellings of Dolloff during Christians lifetime, no one knows the correct Scottish Spelling nor where he came from and therein lies the problem with tracing our heritage past Christian himself. I am investigating that the spelling may have been Dollas. (At one point one published book possibly by Harriett??? said his name was Christian Logardin Dolloff. However someone with a Scottish brogue may have been actually saying:
Crisdean Logar d'in Dollas which would translate to Cris's son of the town of Dollas (Scotland). So we are working on it but the Russian nobleman thing is a total myth!

Quoting from TGM-2: 'Robert Coaker "of Newbury and Miryam Kinge" of Hampton (NH) were presented for fornication in December 1641 at the Ipswich (MA) court, but we have to wait a year to get more of the story. It seems that Robert had "betroted himself too securely to one maiden, and then contracted with another woman." He was sentenced to be severely whipped and to pay Thomas King, who subsequently married the first maiden. Thomas King married Miriam Moulton, the "one maiden" in the above account.

"It is possible, but not proved, that Miriam's child whom she had with Robert Croker was Rachel who subsequently became the wife of Christian Dolloff of Exeter.

"He and his wife, Rachel, were both called ''Cousin' in Thomas King's will, an odd term to use for a step-daughter but it was a rather clumsy situation. " To say the least.2 Rachel was born at out of wedlock, Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, before 1640.3,1 She married Christian Dolloff at Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire, say 1664.4 As of say 1664,her married name was Doloff.4 Rachel Moulton died before 10 December 1674 at Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire.4
