With exemplary patience and fortitude, she endured the pains and distresses with which she was severely tryed. She conversed with composure, and at times with apparent joy, on the solemn scene which presented itself to her view, expressing a lively and joyful hope of acceptance and salvation, through the all sufficient atonement and infinite merit of that divine Redeemer, whom she was not ashamed to confess before the world. In her domestic and social relations, she acquitted herself with that propriety, prudence and fidelity, which endured her to her family and acquaintance.      The Search for the Ancestors of Edward Martin

Latest Update: 7 January 2017

For several years now I have been searching for the parents of Edward Martin, my paternal 4th gr. grandfather. To date, I have been unsuccessful in my search and Edward remains a brick wall. What follows is an account of what I know and can prove as well as tantalizing bits glimpses of possibilities.

First of all, here’s what I know and can substantiate:

1: The first and only direct official record that places him as a resident of Ferrisburg, Addison County, Vermont (or anywhere, for that matter), is the 1810 Federal Census of Vermont. In his household are 2 males under 10 years of age; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 26-44 (presumably Edward); 2 females under 10; 2 females 10-15; 1 female 16-25 and 1 female 26-44 (presumably his wife Elizabeth Chase).

Excluding Edward and Elizabeth, that leaves 8 youngsters in the house. Assuming that they are all his and his wife’s children, there are four children born between 1801 and 1810, 2 children born between 1795-1800, and one child born between 1785 and 1794.

I have identified six children born between 28 Aug 1792 and 22 Apr 1814, leaving 4 unaccounted for.

According to her death record of 9 Nov 1860, Elizabeth Chase was born 24 Apr 1776, at Nine Partners, Dutchess County, NY. It is unlikely that she was married before the age of 18 so, the birth date of her eldest child would have been no earlier than 1794.

Edward disappears from any census after 1810, which suggests that he had died or had abandoned his family. Elizabeth appears in the 1820 and 1830 censuses as head of household and the 1840 and 1850 censuses in the household of Henry Rogers, daughter Susan’s husband,

There were no Martins living in Ferrisburg in 1790, however brothers Reuben and Wait Martin were living in adjoining Charlotte, Chittenden County. The two brothers came from Woodbury, Litchfield, CT, by way of Lanesborough, Berkshire, MA but, neither of them had sons named Edward. There was a John Martin living in nearby Huntington, Chittenden, VT, again with no sons named Edward.

Reuben did have a son William, born 8 Nov 1782, in Lanesborough, MA, according to the IGI. He married Lydia Chase ca 1807. Lydia was the half-sister of Edward’s wife Elizabeth Chase. William lived his life in Charlotte and died there 22 May 1868. Lydia died between 1820 and 1830, as surmised by her disappearance after the census of 1820. According to the 1810 census of Ferrisburg, Edward and Elizabeth (Chase) Martin were living next door to another of Reuben Martin’s sons, Jonas.

These events suggest a familial connection between the Woodbury, CT, Martins and our Edward, but I have not been able to find it. One of the real problems in trying to document early residents of Ferrisburg is the fact that those early records were destroyed in a fire and can only be recreated by inference.

The Chase family originated in Rhode Island with Elizabeth’s father Abraham leaving that state for a settlement in Dutchess County, NY, called Nine Partners, where Elizabeth was born in 1776. Abraham might have been a Quaker but, as far as I know, none of his children followed Abraham in that sect. No Edward Martin of the proper age to have been our Edward appears in any Nine Partners records.

As near as I have been able to determine, there were only two Edward Martins of the proper age and who were born relatively nearby to Ferrisburg: Edward, son of Gottlieb and Anna Catherine (Schumacher) Martin, born 1770, at Red Hook, Dutchess County, NY, And Edward, son of Mathew and Susanna (unknown) Martin, born 13 July 1767, at Townshend, Windham County, VT. Whether or not either of these Edwards are the right one is unknown. There was a John Marten residing at Danby, Rutland County Vermont, in 1778. This John could have been the father of our Edward but, again, there is no evidence one way or another.

There was an Edward Martin, Private, in Captain Edgerton's Company of Vermont Militia, during the War of 1812. That company was attached to the First (Dudley's) Massachusetts Militia. He might be our Edward and was killed or died during his service.

There was also an Edward Martin who died 11 May 1816 at Manchester, Ontario County, NY, and was buried in the Manchester Village Cemetery. Manchester Village was burned 11 July 1813 during the Battle of Blackrock (the early name for Buffalo).
It is possible that this Edward was wounded in that 1813 battle and took three years to die. It does seem doubtful that he was our Edward, however.

In the final analysis, all we know is that Elizabeth Chase married Edward Martin ca 1794, perhaps at Ferrisburg. The couple had six recorded children beginning in 1797. They should have appeared in the 1791 federal census, unless they were living in some other household. They appeared in the 1810 census as mentioned above then Edward disappears from the records. Elizabeth never re-marries and dies in November 1860 at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont.

Until additional information about Edward surfaces, his record has to end here.1,2,3 Edward was born at perhaps, Danby, Rutland, Vermont, circa 1772. As of 8 Dec 2015, his birthplace is unknown. However, the 1880 Census lists daughter Lydia Ann and lists both her parents as having been born in Vermont. However, we know that Lydia Ann's mother Elizabeth Case was born at Nine Partners, New York..4,5 He married Elizabeth Chase, daughter of Abraham Chase and Lydia Allen, at perhaps, Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont, circa 1794. Her marriage date is an estimate based on her birth date and that of her eldest child.

LDS IGI says she was "of Ferrisburg", and the marriage took place in 1794..6,1,4 Edward Martin lived in 1800 Where Edward Martin was is a puzzle. He is not listed in any location in western Vermont or Eastern New York, at least by name.

We know he was a resident of Ferrisburg by 1802 because that is when, and where daughter Eliza was born.

He was old enough to have had his own household in 1800; in fact he was 26 and married with two possibly three children at that time. However, I suspect that he might have been living in some other person's household. That other person could have been a family member or he could have been someone who was unrelated.7,1 He lived in 1810 at Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont.8 He died between 1810 and 1820 at Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont. He was listed in the 1810 census for Ferrisburg, Addison, VT, but not the 1820 census. His wife Elizabeth was listed in the 1820 census as head of household.

I thought that he might have been a soldier in the War of 1812 and was killed in action, or died of disease between 1812 and 1815. However, there was only one Edward Martin listed in the roster of War of 1812 Veterans from Vermont and he was from Randolph.

That leaves two reasons why he wasn't in the 1820 Census: He either died between 1800 and 1820, or he abandoned his family and disappeared.8,9,1

Elizabeth was born at Nine Partners, Dutchess, New York, on 24 April 1776. Chase Desc. says she was born on 25 Apr.

Her Georgia, Vermont, death records claims she was born at Nine Partners, NY..1,2,3 She married Edward Martin at perhaps, Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont, circa 1794. Her marriage date is an estimate based on her birth date and that of her eldest child.

LDS IGI says she was "of Ferrisburg", and the marriage took place in 1794..1,4,5 As of circa 1797,her married name was Martin.1 Elizabeth Chase lived on 7 August 1820 at Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont. She is listed as head of household, suggesting that Edward had died.6 She lived in 1830 at Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont. Listed are Elizabeth, 1 male under 5, 2 males 20-25 and 2 females 15-19.7 She lived in 1840 at Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont. She is not listed as a head of household. However, a woman age 60-69 was listed as living in the Henry Rogers (Rogen) Household. Elizabeth would have been 63 in 1840.

Since she was listed as a member of Henry's household in 1850, it is quite likely that she was living there 10 years earlier.8 She lived in 1850 at Ferrisburg, Addison, Vermont. She was living in Henry Rogers' household, her daughter Susan's husband.9 She died on 9 November 1860 at Georgia, Franklin, Vermont. At age 84 The Georgia VR claims that she was born at Nine Partners, NY.2 She was buried after 9 November 1860 at Hope Cemetery, East Georgia, Franklin, Vermont.10
