John Dow seems to have lived in Newbury, Ipswich and Rowley, as his vital data are generally found in all three towns. A small law suit over the right to cut firewood finds him of Rowley in 1727 on a piece of land bought many years before by his father. It is quite certain that his oldest two children were b. Rowley. He was of Rowley when he receipted for legacies from father and brother. What was his trade we do not know; his children spent most of their early years with grandfather Dow in Ipswich. He seems to have been a widower for 11 years. His 1st wife Mary d Ipswich Sept 1724. Her identity has not been found. Intent published at Ipswich Nov 1725 to Elizabeth Smith. She may be b Apr 3, 1703, dau of Daniel and Elizabeth (Paine) Smith; or b Apr 13, 1704, dau of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Fuller) Smith. No marriage of either is found. It is very doubtful whether she m John Dow, at all events there was no issue. He married (Newlury rec) Jan 29, 1735, Elizabeth Moody, both of Rowley. A son was born and John died 1738. Elizabeth married secondly 4 Feb 1739/40, Benjamin Morrill of Andover, Mass, and took her infant son thither.1 John was born at Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, on 24 April 1685.2,3 He married Mary unknown at Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, before 1712.1 He married Elizabeth Moody at Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, on 29 January 1735/36. Although they were both of Rowley, their marriage record is in Newbury, so the marriage may have actually taken place in Newbury..4,5 John died in 1738 at Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts.6

For nearly twenty years D. Webster Dow of Melrose and North Epping followed industriously the search of genealogy. He had married Alice Burleigh Dow of Epping, like himself of an old Epping family, and to determine their relationship was his goal. Almost all old Epping records were burned many years ago, the exception being the
records of second church. Although he had access to many family Bibles and traditions, he came soon to a point beyond which he could not get. Mrs. Dow's line easily went back to Zebulon Dow, Revolutionary soldier, who married Alice Elsie Burleigh. His own line stopped at Daniel Dow, Revolutionary soldier. There was a vague tradition that Zebulon was son of John. But, what John? There were about five in Epping. Only one is found in any vital record: Lieut. John Dow, gentleman, died Epping 1775, leaving widow Judith. He assumed that Zebulon and Daniel were brothers, although born 18 years apart.

This mystery which defied all Dow researchers was solved in 1917 by a happy discovery of John Mark Moses, a keen student who wished to find a will of Beniah Dow. None being found in Exeter, he went to Concord. Incidentally he searched the rooms of the N. H. Historical Society as never before. Here he found a bound manuscript of the late Governor Samuel Plumer, who at one time considered writing a history of Epping, He got only as far as transcribing the town records and those of two churches. His records are the very ones which have been lost. He seemingly did not know of the records of the second church. The vital statistics in the manuscript are from 1678 to 1842. They are imperfect, many seem not to have ever had original entry. They give, however, the data needed to prove the identities sought.

The manuscript s proves that Benjamin was the father Lieut. John and Daniel. It also proves identity, as Benjamin and Elizabeth were charter members of the church in 1748. Elizabeth was keeping house for her widower brother. Benjamin settled in Epping not many months before 1748. How or where he spent his married life, what was his trade is not known. His brother Isaac had settled 1742 in Amesbury, Mass; his brother Moses and his sister Miriam have never appeared. He had two sons and had at least three more children by 1755.His second marriage to Sarah (?) must have been very close to 1748. She was not an Epping and that her name was Sarah is known only from real estate deeds. trace of his first wife has never appeared. The Plumer manuscript gives his death: 1786 (year blurred, but probably correctly given), age 65, Benjamin Dow. Also in the Plumer manuscript: 1811, age 83, widow of the late Benjamin Dow, and noted midwife. Benjamin's first born was but 7 years younger than she. William G. Nichols of Griffin, Ga, inspected every deed in Exeter bearing the name Dow.

As Benjamin was a constant land speculator, his career is now easily followed. His first purchase was in 1749; by 1758 he bought eleven parcels and sold two. This proves he was comparatively well to do by the time he reached Epping. Two purchases were of expected inheritances, each with a life intervening. His homestead farm amounted to 210 acres. In 1758 he sold two plots which he had owned for five years. He then made a purchase most notable in the history of Dow family,-- from Samuel Gilman Jr., a slice of the newly organized town of Gilmanton, N H. Much of this land was inherited by his son and Gilmanton became the home of more Dows than any other town in this country. This deed contains another remarkable circumstance, witnessed by Benjamin A. Dow, otherwise wholly unknown. There is no tenable hypothesis about him. In 1758 Benjamin transferred to his son John a homestead bought two years previously from Samuel Gilman, Jr. In 1774 he deeded to son Daniel land of equal value, being h his own 140-acre homestead. The three pieces adjoined and were kept by the sons all their lives. That Benjamin deferred his gift to Daniel indicates that Daniel lived elsewhere until 1774. There were no later real estate transactions. It is improbable that any children were born later than 1755.1 He was baptized on 27 April 1712 at Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts.2 Benjamin Dow married (?) unknown before 1735.3 He married Sarah unknown at Epping, Rockingham, New Hampshire, circa 1748. Benjamin's wife's name has not been found. The Dow Genealogy simply says that her name is unknown. The LDS IGI and Ancestral File has him with an unknown wife and one named Sarah. Whether or not he was married once to Sarah, or twice (to an unknown and then to Sarah) is unknown..4 Benjamin died circa 1786 at Epping, Rockingham, New Hampshire.4

No will or administration papers of Noah's father, Benjamin (3), have been found. We have seen that 1/3 of Benjamin's homestead was given to each of the two sons by his first wife (John Daniel. Another son, Josiah, probably inherited the remaining third. Noah apparently had a share of the Gilmanton land. The old fashioned, non-genealogical, inadequate History of Gilmanton gives little aid. Noah was the first Dow to reach Gilmanton in 1772. He married at Belmont, N.H., December 2 1772, Hannah Folsom. daughter of Major David Folsom and Sarah Gilman.

Noah signed the Association Test and in 1777 he enlisted for Ticonderoga, the expedition which turned back after a few days. In later years he was always known as captain, perhaps a militia title. An innkeeper, he gets a mention as being on an important church committee in
1793. Nothing more about his career has been found. The 1790 census gives him as having two sons under 16 and two daughters. No record of burial can be found for Gilmanton.1 Noah was born at probably, Epping, Rockingham, New Hampshire, circa 1739.2 He married (?) unknown at Epping, Rockingham, New Hampshire?, in 1758.3 He married Hannah Folsom, daughter of Maj David Folsom and Sarah Gilman, at Belmont, Belknap, New Hampshire, on 2 December 1772.3,4 Noah died after 1793 at Gilmanton, Belknap, New Hampshire.3

There has been some question as to the identity of Jonathan Dow, but the author of The Book of Dow put those doubts to rest in the book's supplement on page 946, in which he states that, "It is absolutely proven that he [Winslow Dow] was brother of Harrison Dow and Darius Jerome Dow, all being sons of Jonathan [Dow], born 1776 and Joanna Gilman.

"A letter from Winslow's son written in 1903 has just [1929] come to light. This states positively that Winslow Herman Dow, born Fairfax, Vt, August 17, 1808, and died Fairfax 1890, son of John Dow of Glimanton. This fits perfectly with the John or Jonathan, born Epping, N.H., 1776, so of Captain Noah Dow.

" the owner of the name seemed to vacillate in preference between John and Jonathan, and we can no longer doubt that there several diverse lines from Henry Dow who were represented exodus from Gilmanton, N.H. to Walden, Vt., before 1800.

Jonathan was another Dow who married a Gilman. Her Gilman line intermarried with the Benjamin Dow line as well as with the Folsoms. The young couple settled in Walden, Vt., in 1797. Their children appear first in Coventry, Vt., and by the time they were matured, were as much at home in Gilmanton as in Vermont.3

The Gazetteer of 1883 lists him as being of Newport, Vermont, and owning 280 acres.

This writer has two photographs (copy of one herein included) of William's farm in Newport called Hiawatha Farm. One was taken fairly early, although it was probably taken in the twentieth century because there were obvious electric wires shown. The second photo was taken later after considerable renovations to the exteriors of the buildings in the form of painted siding, etc.

My cousin Forrest Dow, who sent the second photo said the photo was taken about 1920 and showed William and his wife Mary Adelaide sitting on the front porch. The 1920 date cannot be right because William died in January 1920, and from what my father has told me, William and Mary moved to a house next door to their daughter Josephine and her husband Clinton Wood. Clinton and Josephine's house was on Highland Avenue.

This suggests that Hiawatha Farm was sold and William moved into town where he subsequently died.

Another dilemma is the location of the farm. I had thought that the earlier photos was of his farm in Coventry, Vt., but Forrest said that it was in Newport. The 1883 Gazetteer's statement that he owned 280 acres in Newport tends to back Forrest up. However, according to the Book of Dow all of the children, including the youngest two: Harold, b. 1888 and Hazel, b. 1891, were born in Coventry. Given that most children were born at home in those days it does seem strange that William would farm 280 acres in Newport, yet have his children all born in the neighboring town.1
He was descended from
William the Conqueror,
Charlemagne and other
Royal Houses of Europe
and Asia.
William was born at Coventry, Orleans, Vermont, on 19 April 1845.2 He married Mary Adelaide Hinckley, daughter of Edward Franklin Hinckley and Lydia M. Bulkeley, at Newport, Orleans, Vermont, on 26 February 1870. A Certificate of Marriage by the minister who married them George H. Bailey, is in the possession of John Roger Wood..2,3 William Wilder Dow lived in 1880 at Coventry, Orleans, Vermont.4 William died on 26 January 1919 at Newport, Orleans, Vermont, at age 73.2,5,6 He was buried after 26 January 1919 at Coventry Village Cemetery, Coventry, Orleans, Vermont.7,8
