The official records tell us that his name was William, but his son Orin and his descendants say it was Oliver. Perhaps he had two names, or perhaps his middle name was Oliver. His military records are all under the name William, so it would seem that William is correct. William, or Oliver, Phelps was a blacksmith in Windsor, CT, when he enlisted in the Revolutionary War. He served as a private in Captain Prentice's Company, the 5th Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade, Colonel Douglass' Regiment. He died in camp at Middlefield, CT, probably of disease, in 1776. The Company was raised in 1776, probably to be sent to Long Island, but he died before leaving Connecticut, and never saw combat. William was born at Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, on 16 March 1702.1 He married (?) Moore at Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, circa 1722.1 He married Anna Bishop at Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, circa 1760.1 William died in 1776 at Middlefield, Middlesex, Connecticut.2

Orin Phelps's occupation as a surveyor no doubt kept him away from home a good bit during his younger years. There is no record of his having been married before he was 34. Some time between 1800 and 1803, he left Windsor, CT, and came to Weathersfield, Vermont, where all of his children were born. Orin is listed as head of household in the 1810-1830 Censuses for Weathersfield. He Owned Lot #53, Division III in 1808 and in 1813 (BUTTERFIELD pg..25), and was on the State Tax Lists for 1808 and 1810 (ibid pg. 470). Orin's brother Bishop and brother-in-law, Elnathan Filley, preceded him in Weathersfield, both being listed in that town's 1800 Census. It is logical to assume that he moved there after having visited the two families. Elnathan and Orin's sister Agnes moved to Weathersfield in 1793 (Barber pg..5). Orin disappears from the Weathersfield Census rolls in 1840, but appears in those of Schroon Lake, Essex County, NY. His son Orin, Jr. also appears on the Schroon Lake 1840 census and had, perhaps, moved there before his father. Orin Sr. followed him later, probably after 1832 when his daughters married into the Elmore, Vermont Josiah Warren family.

Orin is listed as head of household in the 1840 census of Schroon Lake, Essex County, NY., but disappears for any census list in 1850, even though he didn't die until March of 1851. His wife Ruth does not appear on any 1850 census list either, so one has to wonder where the couple was for the 1850 census.1 Orin was born at Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, on 21 November 1768.2,3 He married Ruth Scofield, daughter of Thomas Scofield and Avis Luther, at Weathersfield, Windsor, Vermont, on 24 March 1803.4,5 Orin Phelps lived in 1840 at Schroon Lake, Essex, New York.6 Orin died on 25 March 1851 at Schroon Lake, Essex, New York, at age 82.7 He was buried after 25 March 1851 at South Schroon Cemetery, Schroon Lake, Essex, New York.7

He was a descendant of
Mayflower passengers Richard
Warren and John Billington.
He, and his sons, operated an inn for hunters, hikers, fishermen, etc. in the Loch Muller area of Schroon Lake, NY. The inn was later run by Paschal's son Edison Warren into the 1940s. During the summer of 1992, this writer and Livona Jenks Allen visited the site of the Warren Inn and found it to be abandoned and in need of repair. However, the pine tree that Paschal had planted in 1845, when he was 12, was still there, along with the zinc plaque that he had nailed to the tree in 1920. The plaque reads as follows: "TO ALL LOVERS OF NATURE, GREETING. At this site in the year 1845, this tree, a sapling of twelve years was transplanted by me at the age of twelve. For seventy five years I have watched and protected it. "In my advancing years it has given me rest and comfort. "Woodman, spare that tree! Touch not a single bough! In youth it sheltered me, and I'll protect it now. (That was from a poem by George Pope Morris written in 1830.) "Paschal P. Warren. June 1st, 1920. Age 87."

Paschal's middle name has been given as: Peoria, or Peola, but I wonder if it was just plain Phelps after his mother's maiden name.1

Paschal was born at Schroon Lake, Essex, New York, on 1 June 1834.2 He married Livona Marion Hall, daughter of William Jackson Hall and Clarissa Buel, at Schroon Lake, Essex, New York, on 20 October 1858.2 Paschal died on 28 May 1923 at Schroon Lake, Essex, New York, at age 88. Pascal P. Warren died at the home
of his son, A. E. Warren, in Loch
Muller, Monday, May 28, at the age of
eighty-nine years. He was one of the
substantial citizens of the town of
Schroon and was, at the time of his
death, the oldest resident of the town.
He was born on the place where he
died and the old log house which was
the scene of his earlier life, still
stands. For many years he engaged
in lumbering, which was the principal
business of many residents of that section
fifty years ago. Later, he conducted
a summer boarding house which
he named Bailey Pond Inn, which
grew to be a popular resort and was
the beginning of the present enlarged
house, with its various cottages, conducted
by his son, A. E. Warren, and
now known as "Warren's." Mr. Warren
was a hard working, home loving
man, and his life was lived in the interest
ot of his home community and his
family. His wife, who had been his,
companion for more than fifty years,
died several years ago and since that
time lived with his children.
He is survived by three sons, Herman,
of Orwell. Vt.: Arthur, of Loch Muller,
and Henry, of Schroon Lake; and
by three daughters, Mrs. Water
Jenks. ot Sudbury, Vt; Mrs. Sherry
Oliver and Mrs. James Oliver, of Loch
Muller. The funeral was held at Loch
Muller Wednesday, May 30, conducted
by the Rev. F. M. LaBar, and he was
buried beside his wife in the Schroon
Lake Cemetery..3,4 He was buried after 28 May 1923 at Village Cemetery, Schroon Lake, Essex, New York.3
